В последнее время стало выходить довольно много игр по мотивам известных фильмов, являющихся, правда, частью рекламной кампании. А вот с играми, основанными на литературных произведениях, дела обстоят похуже. Вряд ли удастся вспомнить хотя бы с десяток названий (1). И особняком среди них стоит American McGee’s Alice (2). Про неё и пойдет речь.
Американ МакГи пошел творческим и даже новаторским путём, полностью преобразив мир Кэрролловских сказок, ставший теперь мрачным и жестоким. Впрочем, вселенная игры продолжает сюжетную линию книги. Всё начинается со страшного пожара в доме Алисы, в котором погибают её родители. Она, чувствуя себя виноватой в том, что осталась жива, замыкается в своем внутреннем мире и попадает в больницу для душевнобольных. Через некоторое время к ней приносят её старую игрушку – потрёпанного белого кролика. Это пробуждает в Алисе забытые воспоминания, и она отправляется в новое путешествие по Стране Чудес, целью которого является освобождение её от власти Красной королевы, а заодно и себя от чувства мнимой вины.
Уже посмотрев на скриншоты, легко понять, что главной особенностью American McGee’s Alice является её дизайн. Авторам удалось создать совершенно немыслимые и фантастические образы. Это и великолепное Шахматное королевство, и механизированное пространство Болванщика, в котором тот проводит свои ужасные эксперименты по созданию киборгов, и знакомые, но причудливо исказившиеся персонажи: чего стоит только один Чеширский Кот! Само собой, оружие и враги тоже отличаются от привычных, игроку предстоит, например, метать самонаводящиеся игральные карты в бубновых валетов-стражников. Ну, или рубить их большим кухонным ножом, кому что больше нравится.
К достоинствам игры относятся и интересные находки в области архитектуры уровней. В основном, это касается двигающихся и вращающихся платформ и шестерёнок, во время прогулки по которым надо особенно внимательно следить за игрой, чтобы не упасть куда-нибудь вниз. Всё это безумие прекрасно дополняет красивая музыка Криса Вренны, вышедшая на отдельном CD-аудиодиске через год после релиза игры.
К сожалению, не всё так гладко, как хотелось бы. Дизайн уровней не везде на высоте, местами он, наоборот, удивляет своей однообразностью, особенно это касается начала игры. Далеко не идеальным выглядит и геймплей, виной чему простота прохождения как обычных уровней, так и боссов. На мой взгляд, по отношению к последним не помешали бы более сложные способы одержания победы, чем банальное нанесение n единиц урона.
И всё же, несмотря на эти недостатки, игра быстро увлекает своей атмосферой безумства и эклектики и являет собой редкий случай, когда вторая её половина на порядок лучше первой. Стоит отметить, что Alice начинает задуманный МакГи цикл игр по мотивам известных сказок, вторая часть (3) которого, 24-серийный игровой сериал American McGee’s Grimm, начал выходить отдельными эпизодами в конце июля этого года.
